In a statement, the QCPD also vowed “full support” to Baggay’s family.
“The QCPD mourns the untimely passing of a courageous and dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of his sworn duty,” the QCPD said Monday.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Patrolman Harwin Curtney Baggay and assure them of our full support in this time of grief, it added.
The NCRPO said Baggay is “a hero to all of us” and his courage in the face of danger reflects the highest ideals of police service.
“His sacrifice must compel us to serve with greater vigilance, dedication, and purpose,” the NCRPO said in a separate statement.
“We offer our deepest respect and condolences to the family of Patrolman Baggay. We will extend all the necessary assistance to the bereaved family in full recognition of his duty and sacrifice,” it added.
According to the QPCD, Baggay and another police officer who were stationed in front of Benigno Aquino Elementary School heard successive gunshots 25 meters away from their post.
The two responded to the incident which turned out to be a robbery in progress.
Victim “Sonny” sustained gunshot wounds to his left upper arm and left trunk, while another victim “Irah Mae” was hit by a ricochet of fragment bullet. They were brought to Rosario Maclang Hospital for medical attention.
Baggay was shot by the suspect, hitting his left arm through his chest. Despite his injury, the QCPD said Baggay managed to retaliate while his buddy also shot and killed the suspect.
