MMDA seeks to improve Metro Manila traffic with AI-powered system

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday said it sees improvement in the traffic flow of the metropolis with its new artificial intelligence-powered adaptive signaling system.

"As we phase in the adaptive signaling system, this innovation represents a major step towards ensuring smooth traffic flow, minimizing road crashes and optimizing efficiency," MMDA chairperson Romando Artes said.

"Hopefully, by next year, this innovation will be put into place,” he added.

Traffic signal system using video detectors are less susceptible to damage from roadworks, harsh weather and physical interference, according to the MMDA’s Traffic Engineering Center (TEC).

The MMDA believes with AI technology, the system can capture more information about vehicles such as speed, direction and license plate numbers.

Artes also called out the incompatibility of the traffic signal countdown timers, drivers making split-decisions to speed through intersections and beating the red light incidents.

The MMDA last week announced the removal of traffic light countdown timers in 96 intersections along major thoroughfares in Metro Manila, replacing old fixed-timer traffic lights with an adaptive signaling system which uses sensors.

According to the MMDA, the complete decommissioning of the timers was carried out by the TEC. —Joviland Rita/RF, GMA Integrated News
