New sensor-based traffic lights installed at NLEX Connector interchanges in Manila, Caloocan
Three sets of new sensor-based traffic signal lights were installed at North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Connector interchanges in the cities of Manila and Caloocan on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.
In a statement, the MMDA said it has fully removed older traffic lights that used timers and have installed 90% of adaptive signal lights to replace these.
These changes have led to improved vehicular traffic flow and reduced the number of road accidents, according to the MMDA.
The three sensor-based traffic signal lights were set in C3 Road in Caloocan City, España Boulevard (corner Antipolo Street) and Magsaysay Boulevard in Manila where an estimated 143,000 vehicles will benefit from the system.
“These newly-installed signal lights are not just ordinary traffic signals. They follow MMDA’s updated standards and are equipped with adaptive signaling systems that use sensors instead of traditional timers,” MMDA chief Romando Artes said.
“This technology allows real-time adjustment to traffic conditions, which means better vehicular flow and safer pedestrian crossings,” he added.
The adaptive signal lights were provided by the North Luzon Expressway Corporation, the MMDA said. — Joviland Rita/RF, GMA Integrated News
