QCPD shares findings in Tomas Morato condo falling debris probe
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) on Thursday shared the initial findings in its probe into the falling debris incident at a condominium in Tomas Morato Avenue that killed a student and hurt two others.
“As part of its ongoing probe, the [Special Investigation Team’s] preliminary findings revealed visible cracks on the facade of Unit 8-D, where antennas were installed,” the QCPD said in a statement.
“An independent structural expert also observed that vibrations from drilling and antenna installation may have contributed to the loosening and detachment of plaster materials,” it added.
According to the police, the forensic analysis of the recovered debris is still ongoing.
The QCPD issued the update after one of the three injured students passed away as announced by his father on Wednesday.
On August 12, the victims—all minors and students of Don Roces Science High School—were walking in front of the building when a portion of concrete from the upper structure fell.
Two of the victims, found lying on the pavement, suffered severe injuries to the head. Meanwhile, the other victim sustained an injury on the arm.
The victims were immediately rushed to the Capitol Medical Center for medical treatment.
According to QCPD, the police already met with the victims’ families and stakeholders, including representatives from the involved companies, to clarify possible roles and responsibilities.
“Additional sworn statements and documentary evidence are now being collected to aid in the case build-up. Meanwhile, formal requests for technical documents have been sent to relevant government agencies,” the QCPD said.
Once the evaluation on all testimonial and documentary evidence is done, the QCPD said appropriate charges will be recommended if warranted.
“Appropriate charges, if warranted, will be recommended to the proper authorities once all testimonial and documentary evidence has been thoroughly evaluated,” the police said.
“The QCPD assures the public that it is working closely with partner agencies to ensure accountability and public safety and to give justice to the victims and their families,” it added.
The QCPD earlier said the management of the involved condominium is open to cooperating in the investigation. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
