Student hit by falling concrete debris in QC a Rubik’s cube enthusiast

After losing the battle for his life on Wednesday, 12-year-old Carl Jayden “CJ” Baldonado's coffin can be seen full of his favorite things - a Bible, a paper full of Bible verses, and Rubik’s cubes.

“Masakit sa amin, mabigat sa amin….Sobrang kritikal niya nung dinala sa ospital. Tapos nagpasalamat nga kami kasi binigyan pa kami, ng panalangin namin na second chance. Binigay naman ng Panginoon dahil in-extend niya yung buhay niya, ini-stretch niya para makapag-paalam kami nang maayos,” said Jason Baldonado, CJ’s father, in Darlene Cay’s report on “24 Oras” on Thursday.

(It's painful and heavy for us... He was very critical when he was brought to the hospital. We were thankful because we were given, through our prayers, a second chance. The Lord gave it because He extended his life, He stretched it so we could say goodbye properly.)

CJ and his twin friends were on their way home when they were hit by concrete debris from a condominium at the corner of Tomas Morato and Roces Avenue in Quezon City last August 12.

One of the victims, Michael, is still in the hospital while his twin brother Miguel was already discharged.

The investigation by the special team formed by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) is still ongoing, according to the television report.

An independent structural expert has already checked the condominium building.

“Doon sa initial na inspection nila, nakita nga po na may mga cracks malapit doon sa antenna na naka-install doon sa part ng condominium na ‘yun. So ‘yun po yung tinitignan din ng mga imbestigador natin,” said QCPD chief public information officer Police Major Jennifer Gannaban.

(In their initial inspection, they saw that there were cracks near the antenna that was installed in that part of the condominium. So that's what our investigators are also looking into.)

Based on the preliminary findings of the investigation, the vibrations from the drilling and installation of the antenna in 2022 possibly caused the loosening and detachment of the plaster in that part of the building.

“Definitely criminal and civil cases po ifa-file since kung mapapatunayan na may negligence doon po sa nangyari,” said Gannaban.

(Definitely criminal and civil cases will be filed if it is proven that there was negligence in what happened.)

No one from the management of the condominium faced GMA Integrated News to give a comment.

The area around the condominium has been cordoned off and marked with signage.

CJ’s remains will be cremated on Sunday.

“Sobrang hirap po kasi bilang tatay, malaki din ang pagkukulang ko. Palagi akong wala, kaya babawi ako. Hindi ko sila pababayaan magi-ina,” said Jason.— Vince Angelo Ferreras/LDF, GMA Integrated News
