Fire hits DPWH office in Quezon City

Fire hits DPWH office in Quezon City

A fire broke out at an office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on NIA Road in Barangay Pinyahan, Quezon City on Wednesday afternoon, the Bureau of Fire Protection - National Capital Region (BFP-NCR) said.

In a bulletin, the BFP-NCR said the fire was reported at 12:39 p.m. and reached the third alarm at 12:56 p.m.

At least 25 fire trucks responded to the scene. Fire out was declared out at 1:34 p.m.

GMA Integrated News' Chino Gaston posted on social media that the fire affected the Bureau of Research Standards building of DPWH Quezon City.

In a statement, the DPWH said no documents related to the ongoing investigation into flood control anomalies were in the Bureau of Research and Standards (BRS) building.

"The DPWH BRS is responsible for the conduct of research, studies, pilot testing, and formulation of policies for government infrastructure projects," the DPWH said.

According to the DPWH, the fire was due to an explosion of a computer unit.

"Initial findings indicate that the fire originated from a computer unit inside the Materials Testing Division that reportedly exploded," the department said.

No employees were harmed in the fire, according to the DPWH.

"An investigation team to assess the fire incident has been deployed and is currently conducting a thorough assessment to determine the full extent of the damage and to prevent similar incidents in the future," the DPWH said.

"Further updates will be provided once additional information becomes available," it added.

The fire comes as the authorities investigate DPWH-implemented flood control projects in Quezon City and other areas in the country.

Last month, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte reported that 35 flood control projects in the city are missing.

The local government has also reported 331 flood control projects worth P17 billion, of which P7.7 billion are alleged insertions and were not included in the 2024 and 2025 National Expenditure Programs (NEPs). — VDV, GMA Integrated News
