LRT-1 ops unaffected after passenger’s phone emits smoke — LRMC

The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) said that LRT-1 operations was unaffected Wednesday night after a passenger’s mobile phone emitted smoke inside a train at the Central Terminal Station.

In a statement, LRMC said the incident happened at around 10:02 p.m. when smoke was seen coming from a mobile phone that had been left on the floor of a 3rd Generation LRT-1 train bound north.

The passenger reportedly panicked after the device began to smoke and left it on the floor before moving away. The train driver acted quickly, removing the phone from the train to prevent the situation from escalating, while security and station personnel immediately cordoned off the area.

“The train driver’s swift action in removing the phone from the train prevented any escalation. Security and station personnel instantly responded to secure the area,” LRMC said.

As a precautionary measure, passengers were safely unloaded at the Central Terminal platform while the train underwent a full inspection. LRMC reported that no damage or suspicious items were found and that no one was harmed during the incident.

“We are pleased to report that the incident had no major effects on the overall operations of the LRT-1. The response by LRMC personnel underscores our commitment to maintaining a safe, reliable, and smooth journey for all commuters,” the company added.—Sherylin Untalan/AOL, GMA Integrated News
