WATCH: Cops, protesters clash at Ombudsman's office over flood fund corruption
Protesters gathered in front of the Office of the Ombudsman in Quezon City on Friday, calling for the imprisonment of the perpetrators behind corruption in flood control projects.
In a video by GMA Integrated News’ Saleema Refran, the protesters and police officers were seen pushing each other.
“Lahat ng sangkot, dapat managot (Hold all involved accountable),” the protesters chanted during the clash with the cops.
The protesters at the gate of the Ombudsman’s office were shouting, “ikulong na yan, mga kurakot (jail the corrupt),” as they held up banners and placards.
GMA News Online has sought information from the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) about the incident, but it has yet to provide a statement as of posting time.
The groups that protested before the Ombudsman include Kalikasan People's Network for the Environment, People Surge National Alliance of Disaster Survivors, and Kilusang Bayan Kontra Kurakot, among others.
They called for an urgent investigation into the 414 infrastructure projects worth P26.7 billion in Cebu, following the fatal floods from Typhoon Tino.
The Office of the Ombudsman’s Special Task Force investigating flood control projects will prioritize probing infrastructure works in areas affected by Typhoon Tino.
"The Office of the Ombudsman stands in mourning with the nation for the lives lost in the devastation caused by Typhoon Tino. To the families of all victims of the calamity - we hear you, and we have acted," Ombudsman Crispin Remulla said in a statement.
"A special task force previously designated to investigate flood control projects has been instructed to prioritize those projects meant to prevent the onslaught of Typhoon Tino. Justice will be pursued with compassion, diligence, and resolve," it added.
