WATCH: NCR gears up for Uwan onslaught

Marikina City Rescue 161 boats ready for Uwan

Some local government units in Metro Manila have conducted preemptive evacuations and are preparing their disaster response equipment as tropical cyclone Uwan intensified into a super typhoon on Sunday.

The Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) is on alert for the possible effects of Uwan.

The Manila Police District (MPD) prepared its equipment for possible search and rescue operations.

Rescue boats in Barangay Sto. Niño, Marikina City have already been prepared for the possible flooding caused by the super typhoon.

Over 3,000 individuals were evacuated to H. Bautista Elementary School in Marikina City, according to a report by Mark Makalalad on Super Radyo dzBB.

Several tarpaulins along the Bagong Ilog Flyover in Pasig were rolled up on Saturday in preparation for the expected strong winds brought by the storm.

Based on PAGASA's 11 a.m. cyclone bulletin, Metro Manila is under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3.

Uwan's center was estimated to be located over the coastal waters of Pandan, Catanduanes, it said.

The super typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 230 km/h.

Uwan is moving west northwestward at 30 km/h, and is expected to make landfall over the central portion of Aurora on Sunday night or Monday early morning.

"Due to its proximity, a direct hit (i.e., eyewall affecting the area without making landfall) over Calaguas and Polillo Islands is possible," PAGASA said. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/KG, GMA Integrated News
