Cops secure People Power Monument for Day 2 of UPI rally vs corruption
A fresh batch of police officers was deployed to the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City past 6 a.m. on Monday for Day 2 of the anti-corruption rally of the United People's Initiative (UPI).
The cops were deployed by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), according to a report by Mark Makalalad on Dobol B TV.
The policemen positioned themselves at the monument and along White Plains Avenue in preparation for UPI's rally.
The Quezon City government issued a permit to UPI to continue its rally at the People Power Monument on Monday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The UPI, a group of retired military officials, held a rally along White Plains Avenue on Sunday to call for justice and accountability amid government corruption.
The group, composed of at least 1,000 retired police and military personnel, is calling for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and legislators to end corruption in flood control projects.
Sunday's rally ended at 10 p.m.
UPI said it was expecting at least 300,000 people to join the protest on Sunday which include members of PDP-Laban, One Bangsamoro, Kingdom of Jesus Christ, Jesus is Lord, and Iglesia Ni Cristo. It also said other organizations are welcome to join the rally.
UPI's rally coincided with the rally organized by the religious group Iglesia Ni Cristo at the Quirino Grandstand at Rizal Park in Manila.
On Sunday, Marcos monitored the rallies calling for transparency and accountability conducted by the different groups, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Acting Secretary Dave Gomez said.
As of past 6 a.m. on Monday, the situation at EDSA People Power Monument was quiet, Makalalad said.
