St. Luke’s Hospital opens free 40-bed charity ward in QC

St. Luke’s Medical Center has opened a free 40-bed facility for underserved and indigent Filipino patients in Quezon City.

On Monday, the St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc. (SLMCFI) officially unveiled the Evelyn D. Ang/D?na Charity Ward, which aims to provide no-cost, high-quality and accessible healthcare to indigent patients starting November 10.

According to SLMCFI, the ward is integrated into the main hospital building to ensure that charity patients receive the same standard of care as private patients.

“The Evelyn D. Ang/D?na Charity Ward represents the very heart of St. Luke’s mission: to bring world-class healthcare to every Filipino, regardless of background or circumstance,” said St. Luke’s President and CEO Dr. Dennis Serrano.

“By fully integrating charity care into our hospital system, we are proving that excellence and compassion can coexist. This initiative is not just about access to healthcare — it’s also about giving dignity, equity and hope to our patients in need,” he added.

Serrano stressed that the Evelyn D. Ang/D?na Charity Ward “is more than a facility — it’s a movement of collective generosity.”

SLMCFI president Dr. Benjamin Campomanes Jr. said the new ward is fully woven into the hospital’s daily operations, noting that the same specialists, nurses and clinical teams who attend to private patients are also caring for charity patients.

“This guarantees the same standard of quality, compassion and safety across every case. Because here at St. Luke’s, every patient matters,” he said.

SLMC said the ward reflects the hospital’s One Healthcare System vision, which promotes the coexistence of charity and private services and advances its goal of shared healing within the Filipino community.

“D?na reminds us that the true measure of healthcare is not just in the lives we save, but in the compassion we share,” Serrano added.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
