Heavy security at Mendiola amid Nov.30 rallies
The strategic Mendiola Street leading to Malacanang Palace was under tight security in the form of concertina wire, concrete barriers and police officers in full riot gear on Sunday amid the November 30 anti-corruption rallies in various parts of Metro Manila
In his report, Raffy Tima said the situation along Mendiola Street remained peaceful as of Sunday morning amid the ongoing rallies at Luneta in Manila and the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City.
At the intersection of Mendiola and Legarda Streets, which is just a few hundred meters away from Malacanag Palace, the official residence of the President of the Philippines, was blocked with rows of razor-sharp barbed wire, concrete barriers.
At the foot of the Chino Roces Bridge (formerly Mendiola Bridge) are multi-level shipping containers serving as makeshift walls. Additional shipping containers were also set up at the intersection to prevent both vehicular and foot traffic to enter the area.
Maintaining security are teams of police officers in full riot gear who are expecting additional rallyists from Luneta to proceed to the area in the afternoon.
Earlier, a number of pro-Marcos supporters approached the barricade. Many were carrying placards and signs signifying their support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. There were also a number of militant groups as well. They soon left after a short program.
The heightened security by the National Capital Regional Police Office and the Manila Police District is a result of violence that erupted in the same area during the September 21 rally where several rallyists, many of whom were minors, clashed with police, resulting in several injuries on both sides.
The security was in place early on and commuters had to find alternative routes to their destinations as per Super Radyo dzBB.
