Cashless option now available in EDSA Carousel
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has officially launched the cashless payment options for the EDSA Busway.
In a statement on Wednesday, DOTr said that payments through GCash will now be accepted for bus rides along EDSA Carousel.
DOTR Secretary Giovanni Lopez assured the public that no convenience fees will be applied and that 20% discounts for students, persons with disability (PWDs), and senior citizens will remain.
The new move comes in line with efforts to make public transportation more convenient and accessible for passengers.
"Ito pong cashless payment ay isang malaking pamamaraan upang sa ganoon masasabi natin na indeed the travel of our commuters is now more convenient," said Secretary Lopez.
(These cashless payments are one big step to say that the travel of our commuters is now more convenient.)
"Hindi lang po ang pagmomodernize ng ating mga infrastructure ang kailangan. Hindi lang po ang pagmomodernize ng ating mga pampublikong sasakyan ang kailangan. Higit sa lahat ang pag modernize ng sinasabi nating public service o passenger overall experience at ito ang binibigay ng GCash at ito rin ang binibigay talaga ng consortium sa busway,” he added.
(It’s not just the modernization of our infrastructure that’s needed. It’s not just the modernization of public transportation that is needed. Most of all, it is the modernization of public service or the passenger overall experience and this service being given by GCash and this is what is being provided by the consortium at the busway.)
QR code
To utilize the cashless payment method at EDSA busways, passengers only need to scan the QR code of the conductor’s SoundPay Device and allocate their specific fares.
DOTr said that there are currently 260 busway units with GCash SoundPay devices, and that it will take around a year to fully implement the cashless transactions.
In May 2025, DOTr also launched a cashless payment method via GCash for the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 or the EDSA Railway Line.
According to DOTr, the moves followed directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to make passenger travel more convenient and faster in the Metro. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
