LRT-2 and MRT-3

Almost 3 million passengers were given free rides on the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 from December 14 to 25 during the 12 Days of Christmas - Libreng Sakay program, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.

A total of 2,841,788 passengers were recorded to have been served during the period, the DOTr said in a press release on Friday.

The program gave free rides to specific sectors or beneficiaries per day, with specific days allotted for senior citizens, students, overseas Filipino workers and their families, teachers/health workers, persons with disabilities and male passengers, government employees, female passengers, families, LGBTQIA+ community/solo parents, private sector employees and kasambahays, uniformed personnel veterans and families, with a final "Free for All" day on December 25.

The most number of commuters during the said period were logged at the MRT-3 with 1,183,950 passengers.

The LRT-1 served 1,091,951 passengers, while the LRT-2 had 565,887 riders, the DOTr said.

On Christmas Day itself, December 25, the last day of the program, a total of 835,777 passengers were served on the three rail lines, the highest ridership during the 12 Days of Christmas - Libreng Sakay.

The second highest ridership was recorded on December 18 with 550,138 total riders (PWDs and male passengers), across the three rail lines.

"This overwhelming response demonstrates the importance of accessible public transportation in the lives of Filipino families, especially during the Christmas season. We are honored to serve almost 3 million commuters through this program, providing them with safe, reliable, and free transportation as they celebrate the holidays with their loved ones,” DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez said. —KG, GMA Integrated News
