Last year, the procession lasted 20 hours and 45 minutes and was attended by an estimated 8.1 million devotees, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Earlier, the PNP said they hope to cut the duration of the procession to around 15 hours.
Around 18,000 personnel have been deployed to secure the Traslacion. Around 800 “hijos-pulis” or police officers who are also devotees are part of the procession to provide assistance.
Plainclothes officers and intelligence units have also been deployed to deter pickpockets, theft, scams, and other crimes.
There are police assistance desks set up with personnel assigned to assist senior citizens, persons with disabilities, women, and children.
Gun, liquor, and firecracker bans are in effect, while cell phone signal jammers will also be utilized to prevent potential threats and disruptions that may be carried out through mobile communication devices.
Some roads have been closed to traffic. Areas covered by the activity are also considered no-fly zones.
The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday issued a warning for devotees about the risk of a stampede in crowded areas during traslacion.
The Traslacion is one of the activities during the Feast of Jesus Nazareno.
The procession commemorates the arrival of the image of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno (Our Lord Jesus the Nazarene) from Acapulco, Mexico to the Philippines in the 1600s and the transfer from Bagumbayan (old Intramuros) to the Quiapo Church - St. John Baptist Parish in 1767.
Earlier, authorities rolled out crowd management and safety plans for the annual celebration, with the Quiapo Church sharing locations of entry and exit points, as well as portalets and LED viewing screens to guide the devotees in the area. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
