1 dead, 2 hurt in Navotas warehouse fire

One died while two others were injured after a fire razed a storage facility for event decor and furniture at past Tuesday noon in Barangay San Rafael Village in Navotas City.

In Mariz Umali’s report in “24 Oras,” Navotas Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) investigator SFO2 Junie Bert Mendoza said the lone fatality is a 20-year-old male from Cavite. Two other individuals suffered lacerations.

“Ang tinitignan nating anggulo dito na possible cause of fire is ‘yung electrical overload. ‘Yung nagwe-welding possible gumamit ng extension wire based doon sa initial statement niya. So possible din ‘yung ignition of material caused by welding slag,” Mendoza said.

(The angle we are looking at as a possible cause of fire is electrical overload. The person conducting the welding may have used an extension wire, based on his initial statement. So, it is also possible that there was an ignition of material caused by welding slag.)

The facility was made of light materials, causing the fire to easily spread and reach the second alarm. It took four hours before the fire was put out by firefighters. Damages were initially pegged at P5.2 million.

On the other hand, a fire also hit a residential area in Bacood in Sta. Mesa, Manila on Tuesday afternoon.

The fire reached the third alarm and was declared fire out by 6:30 p.m., the report said.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/JMA, GMA Integrated News
