Mall guard found guilty for throwing puppy from footbridge in Quezon City

A mall security guard, who threw a puppy from a footbridge in 2023, was sentenced to jail and fined by a Quezon City court.

"In July 2023, a security guard in a mall in Quezon City threw a puppy named Browny from a footbridge, leading to the animal's death. AKF pursued a criminal case and today we the verdict was out - GUILTY BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT!," said Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) in a statement.

The penalties, the group shared, include one (1) year and six (6) months and one (1) day as minimum, to two (2) years of imprisonment, as maximum.

"A fine of Php100,000.00. In case accused is unable to pay the fine due to his insolvency, subsidiary imprisonment shall be applied as against him in lieu of the payment of the fine," they added.

The accused in the case was also held civilly liable and was instructed to pay the owner of the puppy, named Browny, P20,000 for moral damages. The amount shall earn 6% legal interest per annum due from finality of judgment of this decision until fully paid.

"May this ruling honor the life that was lost and serve as a warning that ANIMALS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE, and CRUELTY HAS CONSEQUENCES," the AKF said.

"We will continue to speak, fight, and demand justice for those who cannot. WE ARE THE VOICE OF THE VOICELESS," they added. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
