A fire broke out early Wednesday in Quezon City, razing a commercial establishment, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

The blaze at the establishment located along Belfast Avenue corner Quirino Highway in Barangay Pasong Putik in Novaliches started at around 4:40 a.m. and reached the fifth alarm at around 5:16 a.m.

A total of 30 fire trucks responded to the area, according to the BFP-National Capital Region.

At 7:59 a.m., the fire was declared under control.  At 10:48 a.m., the fire was declared out.

Fire officials said the fire spread swiftly inside the supermarket, according to a report of James Agustin on GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita.

Initially, fire extinguishers were used but the flames continued to spread.

Firefighters had to use breathing apparatus due to the thick smoke.

Glass panels at the front of the establishment shattered and portions of the building’s wall also collapsed. Three vehicles were damaged due to the collapsed wall.

Fire officials are closely monitoring a gasoline station located near the area which has a potential risk amid the blaze.

No nearby residential houses were affected by the fire. Although there are subdivisions close to the area, the blaze remained confined to the supermarket compound.

Authorities said the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Initial findings showed that the fire originated from the middle section of the establishment.

Meanwhile, the fire caused heavy traffic along Belfast Street and Quirino Highway. Traffic enforcers were deployed to manage congestion and divert motorists away from the scene. —with a report from Joviland Rita/LDF/KG/AOL, GMA Integrated News
