PNP reminds public: Bomb jokes are against the law
Two passengers ended up in hot water after making bomb-related jokes at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on separate occasions last week, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Monday.
In a statement, the PNP reiterated its reminder to the public not to crack bomb-related jokes as such actions are against the law.
“Airport security is a shared responsibility. Every passenger must be aware that joking about bombs is not only dangerous but also a criminal offense. Think before you joke – it could save lives and prevent serious legal consequences,” said PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.
On January 26, an airline passenger bound for Bacolod City made a bomb joke while stowing away her luggage in the overhead bin of an aircraft.
The aircraft’s cabin crew immediately reported the matter to airport security.
The PNP Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP), NAIA Police Station 3, and explosives and ordnance teams responded to the scene and later confirmed that the baggage was clear of any explosive.
The passenger was escorted off the aircraft for proper disposition. The passenger will face complaints for unjust vexation under the Revised Penal Code and violation of Presidential Decree 1727 or the Bomb Joke Law.
A few days later on January 30, another passenger at the NAIA Terminal 3 allegedly made a bomb-related remark while undergoing routine baggage inspection.
Authorities secured the area, with thorough inspection confirming that there were no explosives or hazardous materials present.
The passenger was escorted for documentation and offloaded from the flight in coordination with airline authorities.
“Huwag po nating gawing biro ang bomb threats (Let us not make a joke out of bomb threats). Even a single statement can disrupt airport operations, cause panic, and put everyone at risk. The PNP will act promptly to ensure the safety of all passengers and personnel,” Nartatez added. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
