Man fleeing arrest killed after being hit by bus in Pasay City

A man died after he was hit by a bus while attempting to flee from police officers who were trying to arrest him in Pasay City.

According to a report by Vonne Aquino on “24 Oras Weekend” on Sunday, operatives of the Philippine National Police–Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) were conducting anti-criminality and anti-carnapping operations in the area after receiving intelligence information about a wanted individual.

The suspect was flagged down for using an improvised license plate on his vehicle. Upon verification of his identity, authorities discovered that he had three standing warrants of arrest for estafa issued in Zamboanga City.

“He is among our Top 10 most wanted at the provincial level. It also turned out during verification that the suspect was using a vehicle with an improvised plate,” said PNP-HPG spokesperson Police Lieutenant Nadame Malang.

The suspect allegedly resisted arrest and injured some of the police escorts before managing to break free and run away, the report said.

“When we were about to place handcuffs on him, he took that opportunity to escape. He sustained severe head injuries and was later declared dead on arrival at a hospital,” Malang added.

Police said the man was struck by a passing bus while fleeing.

The bus driver is now under the custody of the Pasay City Police’s Vehicular Traffic Investigation Section. He declined to issue a statement.

Pasay City police said the driver may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.

“We are still waiting for a copy of the LGU’s CCTV footage to determine whether there was any negligence on the part of our operatives,” Malang said.—Vince Angelo Ferreras/MCG, GMA Integrated News
