Couple chased by cops after fleeing San Juan checkpoint had ₱50K worth of marijuana
A couple on a motorcycle was chased by police after feeling a checkpoint was found to have P50,000 worth of marijuana.
According to Emil Sumangil’s exclusive report in “24 Oras” on Tuesday, the couple was initially flagged at police checkpoint for not wearing the proper footwear while riding a motorcycle.
"Instead of stopping to cooperate with our police, he sped off on his motorcycle,” said San Juan City Police chief Police Colonel Anthony Gantang. “So our cops immediately chased him.”
CCTV footage showed the couple using the bike lane along Aurora Boulevard to flee the authorities. But they were caught by the pursuing cops at the boundary of San Juan and Santa Mesa, Manila.
Police later found out the couple had a plastic bag containing an estimated 30 grams of marijuana.
“At first, they said they were in a hurry because their child had an emergency. But when we saw the plastic bag in the bag, he acted nervous when we asked him what was inside,” said San Juan Police station commander Police Captain Vic Reyes.
The marijuana has an estimated value of P50,000, the cops said.
But the suspect claimed the cannabis was meant for a “celebration” and not for sale.
“There’s a celebration, that’s why such a scenario happened, it’s for the visitors. I hoped I would be given another chance, I have a child. This is the first time it happened and I don’t often use it,” he said. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
