LTFRB cracks down on operators of dilapidated jeepneys in QC

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has summoned the operators of at least 10 dilapidated passenger jeepneys in Quezon City as part of its efforts to improve public transportation in the country.

In a statement, LTFRB chairperson Vigor Mendoza II said the issuance of show cause orders (SCOs) is part of their random and surprise inspections of bus and public utility vehicles (PUVs) terminals.

“This should serve as a strong message that we are serious and committed for a drastic change when we in the LTFRB declared that we will run after run-down PUVs and bus and PUV terminals with dilapidated facilities,” Mendoza said on Wednesday.

“Simultaneously, PUV units were inspected and found to have defective brake lights, worn-out cushion seats and ceiling,” he added.

So far, the LTFRB has issued SCOs and notices of violation to 87 bus and PUV terminals across the country as the agency ramped up its campaign against run-down PUVs and terminals.

On Tuesday, February 10, a team of LTFRB inspectors made the rounds of West Avenue and Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue (formerly Roosevelt Avenue) in Quezon City and saw 10 passenger jeepneys parked along the road.

Mendoza said this is proof that there is no designated garage for the passenger jeepneys, a violation of LTFRB Memorandum Circular No. 2017-027.

The LTFRB chief said PUV drivers who were not in proper uniform were called out by the LTFRB inspectors and were told to observe the policy about wearing presentable clothes.

Another team was sent to the Eton Centris in Quezon City, where the terminal operator was reminded to improve the facilities for passengers’ safety and comfort. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
