The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) raised the alarm on Wednesday over an increase in suicide and self-harm incidents in Metro Manila.

In a statement, the NCRPO said recorded incidents from January 1 to March 23, 2026 surged to 111. This is higher compared to the 33 cases recorded from January to March last year.

“Behind these numbers are individuals facing silent emotional struggles—underscoring the need for early recognition, timely intervention, and stronger community awareness,” the NCRPO said.

“Many cases stem from emotional distress, relationship issues, financial pressure, or personal loss,” it added.

For NCRPO, these incidents can be prevented when early indicators are addressed with compassion and prompt action.

The police raised concerns about youth spending long hours in digital environments including gaming platforms.

“While these platforms offer entertainment, prolonged and unsupervised engagement—especially when paired with harmful communication or cyberbullying—may heighten emotional vulnerability. Digital spaces must therefore be considered part of the overall risk environment,” the NCRPO said.

“To address this, NCRPO is strengthening real-time and community-based interventions under the Enhanced Managing Police Operations (EMPO) framework,” it added.

Police units are coordinating with barangays, schools, and local stakeholders to improve early detection and response.

The NCRPO urged the public to remain attentive to behavioral changes, such as social withdrawal, excessive gaming, or shifts in online activity.

Authorities reminded the public that the 911 emergency hotline remains available for urgent situations.

NCRPO chief Police Major General Anthony Aberin stressed the need for vigilance, especially in monitoring online activity among the youth.

“Habang lumalawak ang pakikipag-ugnayan ng ating kabataan sa online platforms tulad ng gaming environments, kailangan din nating maging mas mapagmatyag sa mga panganib na maaaring kaakibat nito. Hindi lahat ng nakikita o nakakausap online ay ligtas,” Aberin said.

(As our youth increasingly engage with online platforms such as gaming environments, we also need to be more vigilant about the dangers that may be associated with it. Not everyone we see or talk to online is safe.)

“Mahalaga ang gabay ng pamilya, paaralan, at komunidad upang matukoy agad ang mga senyales ng distress. Sa bawat maagang paglapit, pakikinig, at pag-aksyon, may pagkakataon tayong makapigil at makapagligtas ng buhay,” he added.
