Several commuters in Metro Manila had a hard time looking for a ride as only a few jeepneys were plying the roads ahead of the protest by transportation groups on Thursday.

In Oscar Oida’s report on “24 Oras,” many commuters were stranded along PHILCOA in Quezon City.

According to the traffic enforcers, many jeepney drivers did not make a trip to queue for the government’s cash assistance.

“There are only a few jeeps left on the road and so many commuters, yet there is no improvement with the transportation system,” said Elein.

Meanwhile, Albert Soriano waited for half an hour together with his young daughter for a ride.

“It's been half an hour. I have my kid with me. Then once you try to get a ride, it's totally packed,” he said.

Even car owners had to consider commuting amid the rising fuel prices.

“I don't usually commute since we have a car, but with gas prices so high and life being so tough lately, you're really forced to find ways to save,” one commuter said.

In Shaw Boulevard in Pasig City, commuters are scrambling to get ahead of each other just to board the few available jeepneys, most of which are already full. But it’s a challenge for elderly commuters.

“Gas is so expensive, which is why only a few drivers are out on the road right now,” one commuter expressed.

Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation apologized to commuters, adding that it has deployed free bus rides to various areas.

The department said that the congestion worsened only because it coincided with the cash aid distribution at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

For the upcoming transportation strike, the DOTr said it has identified the affected routes and will deploy free rides. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/LDF, GMA Integrated News
