A commuter in Quezon City has paid more than the usual fare, voluntarily giving extra to help a driver cope with the rising fuel costs as oil prices climb.

Other small but meaningful gestures by ordinary folk to their fellow in need were also reported by GMA Integrated News' You Scoopers on Friday's report on "Saksi."

After handing his payment, the passenger immediately alighted from the jeepney.  The driver was surprised to see the P200 fare.

"P200, who gave this?" the driver asked his passengers, who told him that the man had stepped down from the vehicle.

The driver, Roel Stephen Manuel, who shared the video, said, "Di ko alam kung gaano nyo na katagal ginagawa ito, pero mula sa akin at sa lahat ng mga tsuper na natulungan nyo, maraming maraming salamat po."

(I don't know how long you have been doing this. But on behalf of the other jeepney driver you have helped, I'd like to say, thank you very much."

Another You Scooper, May Albert Flores, shared that her daughter rode the jeepney going to school, but found out that she had left her wallet at home when she was about to pay.

Alliah, her daughter, immediately asked the driver to pull over so she could step down because she had no money.

Instead of asking her for her fare, the driver gave Alliah P100.

Flores said they looked for the driver in the terminal to thank him and return the money, but they only met the jeepney operator, to whom they handed the payment.

In Calapan, Oriental Mindoro, a community pantry was set up for residents needing food, similar to initiatives in Metro Manila. —LDF, GMA Integrated News
