The driver who figured in the viral "gas-and-run" incident has surrendered, the Quezon City Police District said on Monday night.

The 27-year-old suspect was accompanied by members of his family when he turned himself in to the QCPD Station 1 at 8:00 p.m.

The authorities earlier said that the driver and the vehicle had been identified following forward and backward CCTV tracking and coordination with concerned agencies.

Investigation indicated that the suspect stopped driving and avoided social media after the incident went viral.

The suspect said he was unaware that authorities were already looking for him. He said he stayed home in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, where the vehicle involved in the incident was also kept.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning when the suspect, in his multi-purpose vehicle, stopped at a gasoline station on EDSA and requested a full tank of diesel.

He then suddenly sped off without settling the P5,196 fuel bill, leaving the pump attendant unable to catch up.

Police Brig. Gen. Randy Silvio, QCPD director, said investigators conducted backtracking operations and were able to trace the white vehicle through CCTV footage.

The QCPD shall proceed with the filing of the appropriate case for estafa through regular filing before the Office of the Prosecutor. —NB, GMA News
