Due to surging fuel prices in the country, some Catholics in Metro Manila were prompted to undertake the traditional Visita Iglesia in nearby locations.

According to Darlene Cay’s Thursday report on “24 Oras,” Manila Cathedral visitor Rolito Campos shared that before, he and his family did the Visita Iglesia in provinces such as Pampanga and Ilocos, but with the oil price hikes, they decided to do it within Metro Manila instead.

Campos said what is important is their prayers and their wholehearted remembrance of the significance of the Lord’s sacrifice.

Catholics trooped to the historic Manila Cathedral for the Mass of the Last Supper, including Janine Abalo, who has been doing Visita Iglesia with her friends for the past 12 years.

Wearing t-shirts specially designed for the occasion, she said they may have different prayer intentions, but they have one desire: peace of mind and peace in the country.

Tight security was also enforced inside the cathedral, with police and soldiers stationed nearby.

Some devotees also took the opportunity to explore the Walled City of Intramuros and Rizal Park, as they decided not to travel far because of the tight budget caused by high fuel prices.

This year, 12 individuals who helped teach and spread the Catholic faith participated in the reenactment of Jesus Christ washing the feet of His apostles.
