1 dead, 21 hurt hurt after modern jeepney, armored van crash in Quezon City

A 62-year-old man was killed and 21 others were hurt after a modern jeepney and an armored van figured in a road crash on Quezon Avenue corner Miriam Defensor Santiago Avenue in Quezon City early Friday morning.

“The injured were immediately assisted by responding personnel and brought by ambulance to the nearest hospital for medical treatment,” the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, a 62-year old male was declared dead by the attending physician,” it added.

According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the incident happened along the westbound lane of Quezon Avenue at around 5:11 a.m.

The MMDA said one lane was occupied due to the crash while traffic enforcers were deployed to manage the flow of vehicles in the area.

One passenger was trapped inside the overturned vehicle and rescued.

Super Radyo dzBB's Allan Gatus reported the injured passengers were brought to three hospitals: Quezon City General Hospital, East Avenue Medical Center, and National Kidney and Transplant Institute.

He said, according to the modern jeepney conductor, only 20 people were onboard the vehicle, including him and the driver, when the incident happened.

Lt. Col. Brian Jaime, Quezon City Police District -Traffic Enforcement Unit head, said they will get a copy of the CCTV footage to determine the real cause of the incident as the drivers of the modern jeepney and armored car were blaming each other.

The radio report also said that the involved vehicles have been removed from the site.

“As of 6:52 AM, Quezon Avenue-Agham Road intersection (westbound) is now fully cleared and open to vehicular traffic,” the MMDA said in an update.

“MPCG conducted clearing operations to remove glass debris from the roadway, ensuring the safety of motorists. All vehicles involved in the road crash incident have been removed from the site,” it added.

According to the QCPD, the modern jeepney driven by a 43-year-old male was traversing Quezon Avenue from Elliptical Road toward EDSA, while an armored van truck driven by a 45-year-old male was traveling from North Avenue toward East Avenue.

“Upon reaching the intersection, the right mid-side portion of the bus and the front left portion of the armored van truck collided, resulting in damage to both vehicles and injuries to 21 individuals,” it added.

The two drivers may face charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries, and damage to property, the QCPD said.—Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA News
