Cop who just finished 24-hour SONA duty run over by 10-wheeler truck

A police officer was killed after a 10-wheeler truck ran over him along C-3 Road in Caloocan City on early Tuesday morning.

In a “24 Oras” report by James Agustin on Tuesday, the 33-year-old victim was riding his motorcycle on his way home after finishing his duty on Monday, July 27—the fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of the President.

The victim was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

According to a witness, he had been driving alongside the victim starting from 5th Avenue.

“Napansin ko na gumegewang, nag-ano na siya, papaling-paling na. Sa unahan namin may trailer, pagdating doon sa trailer, gusto niyang um-overtake,” the witness said.

(I noticed that he was swerving back and forth. There was a trailer truck ahead of us, and when he got near it, he tried to overtake.)

“Pagpaling niyang ganon, pumalo siya doon sa driver’s side. Pag palo niya sa driver’s side, kumaskas na siya doon, pag kaskas don, siya natumba sa may gitna at doon na siya kinain ng dalawang gulong,” he added.

(As he leaned over to overtake, he hit the driver’s side. After clipping the side, he slid and fell towards the middle, where he was run over by two of the truck's wheels.)

The victim’s family confirmed that he was a police officer and said that he was heading home to Caloocan City.

“Galing po siya sa SONA kasi naka-duty siya 24 hours po. Siguro ‘yung pagewang-gewang na yon sa sobrang antok niya na e ikaw ba naman mag-duty nang ganong oras tapos naka-motor ka di ba?” the victim’s aunt said.

(He was coming from his SONA duty because he worked a 24-hour shift. The swerving was probably because of how tired he was—who wouldn't be exhausted riding a motorcycle after working those kind of hours?)

“E halos magfo-four years lang siyang naging pulis e. Siyempre napakasakit naman po nuon,” she added.

(He had barely been a police officer for four years. It’s truly heartbreaking.)

The 37-year-old truck driver is currently in the custody of the Caloocan Police.

He stated that he was coming from Pampanga to deliver hollow blocks to Malabon when the incident occurred.

“Nagulat na lang po ako nung biglang bumangga sa ano ko, sa truck. E pagtingin ko e, nakahandusay na na yung tao,” the truck driver said.

(I was startled when something suddenly struck my truck. When I looked, a person was already lying on the ground.)

“Humihingi po ako ng pasensya sa kanya kasi hindi naman po namin kagustuhan ‘yung ganoon,” he added.

(I ask for their forgiveness because I never wanted any of this to happen.)

The truck driver will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.

GMA News is currently seeking a statement from the Philippine National Police (PNP) regarding the officer's alleged 24-hour duty.

In a statement, National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) Commissioner Vicente Calinisan extended his condolences to the fallen lawman.

"I extend my deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of the police officer who tragically lost his life in a road accident after reportedly completing a 24-hour security deployment during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 27, 2026," the official said.

"It is painful to know that a police officer never made it home after serving the nation. Police work is often a quiet and thankless job. It is not enough to honor their sacrifice; we must also ensure that they return home safely to their families and receive the rest and support they deserve. Every police officer's life matters," he added.

Calinisan said while the investigation is ongoing, he said the tragedy is a reminder that well being of police officers does not end with their assigned mission, and this extends to their safety, welfare and the ability to return to their loved ones safely.

He said he has instructed the NAPOLCOM to coordinate with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and concerned agencies in order to expedite the processing of all benefits to the late cops' dependents. —Lyjah Tiffany Bonzo/RF, GMA News
