Fire hits residential area in Malate, Manila

A fire broke out in a residential area in Barangay 739 in Malate, Manila early Wednesday, according to a Super Radyo dzBB report by Carlo Mateo.

The fire was reported at around 1:41 a.m., said the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), which raised the alarm to the fourth level at past 2 a.m.

The fire was declared under control at 3:45 a.m.

The BFP said they had difficulty getting stable water supply since fire hydrants were located far. The fire hydrants nearby had low water pressure, according to a report by EJ Gomez on Unang Balita.

More than 100 houses were damaged by the fire, according to the barangay.

Majority of the affected houses were made of light materials.

More than 70 firetrucks responded. Some firemen had to go up on roofs near the affected area to train their water hoses on the burning houses.

Residents helped by drawing water from the nearby creek to douse the fire.

Some residents said they were not able to save any of their belongings.

The BFP is still conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and estimated cost of property damage. —LDF/KG, GMA News
