The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in Quezon City on Sunday temporarily limited the admission of walk-in patients as it has reached its full bed capacity due to a surge in leptospirosis cases.

An advisory issued on Aug 23 said the measure was also prompted by the high number of patients in the emergency room, according to Christian Maño’s Sunday report on Super Radyo DZBB.

Patients who need non-emergency admission are advised to coordinate with their attending physicians and consider other healthcare facilities with available beds to avoid prolonged waiting time.

Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria spread through the urine or feces of infected animals, mostly rats, and affects both humans and animals.

On Saturday, San Lazaro Hospital logged at least three deaths from leptospirosis from Aug 10 to 22.

The San Lazaro Hospital currently has 60 leptospirosis patients, 22 of whom are new admissions and 19 are in severe condition, according to a “24 Oras Weekend” report on Saturday.

The Department of Health (DOH) has reminded the public to practice the following actions to protect themselves from leptospirosis.

  • Wear boots
  • Immediately wash the feet with clean water and soap
  • Avoid further exposure if you have an open wound

DOH also urged the public to consult a doctor before taking any medicine for leptospirosis. —RF, GMA News
