From wards to the presidential suite: Room rates at the PGH

A few days after former House Speaker Martin Romualdez was arrested in his hospital bed at a private hospital, the Sandiganbayan ordered his transfer to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) to verify his doctors' medical findings.

The PGH is a tertiary state-owned hospital located in Manila. It is administered and operated by the University of the Philippines Manila and is primarily funded through the UP System's budget allocation.

Romualdez was moved to the PGH on Saturday, entering through what the hospital's guards said was not the regular entryway for patients.

It has not been disclosed what room the former Speaker is in, but according to its website, PGH offers at least 10 types of rooms under its Department of Private Patient Services (DPPS).

The most affordable option is the “Ward” at a daily rate of P715, followed by “Semi-Private I” (one to three beds) at P1,000 per day, and the “Cubicle” at P1,100.

“Semi-Private II” rooms accommodate one to two beds and are priced at P1,430 daily. The final option priced below two thousand pesos is the “Studio Room” at P1,650 per day.

PGH also offers “Small Private” and “Big Private” rooms at P2,200 and P2,750, respectively, while “Superior” rooms are priced at P3,300. The PGH's 2026 Citizen’s Charter lists the price for a Big Private room at P1,500.

The two most expensive options under the DPPS are the Executive Room at P5,500 per day and the Presidential Suite, which costs P6,600 per day.

The room rates provided by PGH cover only the base daily accommodation charge and do not include additional hospital expenses such as professional fees, laboratory tests, and other medical procedures.

Romualdez and three others are facing a P7.4-billion plunder charge over alleged links to flood control scam. He has been in the hospital since last week, when he was arrested in his hospital bad at Cardinal Santos Medical Center.
