DSWD provides parenting effectiveness service amid school violence incidents

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is providing parenting effectiveness service to families amid the recent school violence incidents across the country.

DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao said the service will equip parents as they perform their parental responsibilities.

"Ang mahalaga dito ay 'yung na pro-provide na parenting effectiveness service para mas mapalakas pa ang ugnayan ng pamilya, and for the parents na mapalakas 'yung pag-perform nila ng parental responsibilities," Dumlao told Super Radyo dzBB on Sunday.

(What's important is that the parenting effectiveness service can help strengthen the relationships in a family and the parents' capabilities to perform their parental responsibilities.)

"Ibig sabihin, sa loob ng tahanan, napakalakas na ang ugnayan at ang relasyon para magabayan nang magabayan nang husto ng mga magulang ang kanilang mga anak ng sa gayon mailayo sila sa kapahamakan o karahasan," she added

(This means strengthening relationships and communication within the home so that parents can properly guide their children, help them make better decisions, and protect them from harm or violence.)

A Grade 11 student was wounded after being stabbed by a fellow student at a school in Laoag City on Friday. The incident involved teenagers believed to have a confrontation.

In June, two students opened fire on their classmates at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, killing three students and injuring 20 others.

In August, a student shot his classmate at Ateneo de Zamboanga University before turning the gun on himself, leading to two deaths.

Dumlao shared that DSWD also provides psychosocial first aid to affected individuals who have witnessed incidents of violence.

The agency also provides capacity building for trauma care so that other individuals in the school can observe the behaviors of affected people.

Dumlao said DSWD's social workers are assessing affected families to determine what assistance the department will provide. —KG, GMA News
