(Update) Police officer sacked over Caloocan jailbreak
A senior police officer was sacked following the escape Sunday of five inmates from their detention cell at the Northern Police District headquarters in Caloocan City. Relieved as head of the District Police Investigation Unit where the jailbreak took place was Supt. Maximo Valiente, said NPD director Chief Supt. Leopoldo Bataoil. "Itâs a matter of command responsibility," Bataoil was quoted by radio station dzBB as saying. Installed as Valienteâs replacement was Supt. Jimili Macaraeg. Under heavy rain Sunday evening, inmates Faustino Sampang, 29; Marvin Rubio, 29; Agustin Geneses; Salvador Eugenio; and Romeo Villaluz bolted jail by destroying some of the steel bars of their detention cell. Police investigators later recovered two wrappers of butter, indicating the inmates may have even spread butter over some parts of their bodies so they could "literally slip through" the cell. Police are now trying to track down the five inmates, whose cases range from robbery-snatching to physical injury. -GMANews.TV
