City officials: Don't swim in Manila Bay's toxic waters

As some people have been seen taking a dip in Manila Bay due to the summer heat, Manila city officials appealed to the public not to swim at the bay because the water there is "toxic." Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim said the water there is not safe because commercial and business establishments dump wastewater into the bay, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported. Lim also cited reports that residents living near the bay relieve themselves or throw their garbage into the bay's waters. He said those who swim in Manila Bay face health risks such as skin infections. The dzBB report said Lim ordered the Manila Police District to deploy teams to Manila Bay to discourage people from diving into the bay. – VVP, GMA News
