RP's Tipon gets to bantam boxing finals at Doha
Joan Tipon lived up to his billing as the Phillippine's most promising boxer when he entered the bantamweight finals of the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. Tipon fought hard against a hard working Worapoj Petchkoom of Thailand who managed to tie the Filipino 13-all after four tough rounds. But Tipon went on to the finals with the judges awarded him more unscored points than his Thai opponents. Points are made when three of the judges, using an electornic scoring device, simultaneously give a point to a boxer. When a bout is tied after the end of the match, points which did not translate into scores are counted and the victory is given to the boxer with more of these points. Two other Filipinos, however, fell against much superior opponents. Godfrey Castro bowed to Thailand's Pannon Suban through a referee stopped contest in the light flyweight category, while Genebert Basadre absorbed a 29-18 beating from China's Hu Qing in their lightweight division semifinal match.
