Weather: Cyclone may make landfall in Leyte-Surigao area on Saturday

An incoming tropical cyclone is likely to make landfall in the Leyte-Surigao area between Eastern Visayas and Mindanao on Saturday, state weather forecasters said Thursday.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration also warned against travel in some areas especially on Sunday.

"Based on forecast, (the tropical depression) will make landfall on Leyte-Surigao area on Saturday morning," it said on its Twitter account.

While the weather on Friday will remain fair, it could be cloudy with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms on Sunday, PAGASA said.

Metro Manila may be affected on Saturday or Sunday, it added.

PAGASA also said it is possible that the cyclone may affect Panay Island Saturday.

Earlier Thursday, PAGASA forecaster Sonny Pajarilla said the cyclone, expected to enter Philippine territory Thursday, had showed signs it may intensify.

Pajarilla said their forecast models show the cyclone may stay in Philippine territory until Monday or Tuesday.

On the other hand, PAGASA cautioned against travel to some parts of Mindanao especially on Sunday, due to the threat from the cyclone.

"It is safe to travel (Thursday night to Davao) but not on Sunday. Aviation authorities will decide whether the flight will be suspended or not," it said. — RSJ, GMA News
