The rollback of minimum fares for passenger jeeps has brought relief not only to commuters but for many jeepney drivers as well.

Many jeepney drivers plying routes in Metro Manila said they no longer need to fumble for 25-centavo coins to give back to passengers as change, radio dzBB reported Tuesday.

In eastern Metro Manila, dzBB's Glen Juego reported drivers plying routes at Crossing and Shaw Boulevard also said they have had problems with the 25-centavo coins.

"Okay na ang P8 kasi mahirap maghanap ng 25 centavos," said "Gilbert," one of the drivers plying routes in Mandaluyong City.

In Quezon City, dzBB's Allan Gatus reported many jeep drivers plying routes from Muñoz Market to Vito Cruz admitted having problems with the 25-centavo change.

They said they had on several occasions just given passengers a P2 change for their P10 fare instead of P1.50.

Effective Tuesday, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board withdrew a 50-centavo fare hike for jeep drivers due to high fuel prices.

LTFRB board member Manuel Iway said they had made it clear the provisional fare hike would be withdrawn once diesel prices fall below P45 per liter.

The fare rollback is particularly expected to benefit students who will start returning to school for the new academic year starting June 4. –KG, GMA News
