NDRRMC: Death toll from heavy rain now at 60

The death toll from several days of heavy rain brought by the southwest monsoon enhanced by tropical cyclone "Haikui" rose to 60 on Friday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said. In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC said seven people remained missing, while 24 roads and three bridges remained impassable to vehicles. Among the most recent fatalities were:

- Reynaldo Padilla, 37, Brgy. Angayan Sur, Balungao in Pangasinan; drowned after falling into the river - Noel Lopes, 40, Cuenca, Batangas, electrocuted - Nicole Acosta, 9, Brgy. San Juan, Taytay, Rizal, drowning - Noel Garde, 14, Brgy. San Juan, Taytay, Rizal, drowning - Christian Garde, 12, Brgy. San Juan, Taytay, Rizal, drowning - Reynaldo Haipit, Brgy. San Jose, Rodriguez, Rizal, drowning - Christian Fontanilla, 21, Lucban, Quezon, drowning - Christian Curiano, 3, Dulong Wawa, Malaban, Laguna, drowning - Alberto Madarang, 83, Calamba City, Laguna, drowning - Christian Jay Bellista, 17, Calamba City, drowning
Missing was Jason Pendido, 16, of Manaoag in Pangasinan. He was carried away by the strong current while crossing the Sinukalan River in Manaoag last August 8. The NDRRMC said the rain had affected at least 539,838 families or 2,442,135 people in 1,849 villages in 144 towns and 31 cities in 16 provinces. Of these, 77,850 families or 362,307 people are staying in 729 evacuation centers. Damage At least 379 houses were destroyed while 2,756 were damaged. The NDRRMC also said 95 cities and towns from Metro Manila, Ilocos, Central Luzon and Southern Luzon suffered severe flooding. Five provinces and 23 cities and towns have been placed under a state of calamity because of the disastrous floods. Still under water were roads in the CAMANAVA (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela) area in Metro Manila, Ilocos Sur, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan, Batangas, Laguna, Rizal, Abra, Aklan, and Iloilo. Some areas in Pampanga, Bulacan (Meycauayan), and Navotas and San Juan Cities in Metro Manila were still without power as of 6 a.m. Friday. — LBG, GMA News
