NDRRMC: 70-yr-old Leyte fisherman Typhoon Karen's 1st fatality


A fisherman from Southern Leyte drowned amid bad weather conditions brought by Annular Typhoon Karen (Sanba), the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Saturday. The NDRRMC's 1 p.m. report identified the fatality as Juan Cabales, 70, of Bugo village in Tomas Oppus town in Southern Leyte. In its report, the NDRRMC said Cabales went fishing at 8 p.m. of September 12 "and never went back home." His body was found off the shore of Kawayan village in Libangon town in Southern Leyte at noon of Friday. Karen was already inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility at the time Cabales went missing. Evacuations In Metro Manila, meanwhile, at least 447 people in Quezon and San Juan Cities were evacuated from their homes early Saturday due to rain from the monsoon enhanced by Karen. These included 400 in San Juan City, and 47 in Quezon City. Other incidents the NDRRMC monitored included:

- a landslide in Hinabangan, Samar at 4 a.m. last Wednesday. Two houses owned by Susemo Abayare, 57, and Mario Abarracoso, 27, were damaged. - a flash flood at 3 p.m. last Sept. 10 at Malaybalay City in Bukidnon, where 53 families were evacuated but eventually returned to their homes.
The NDRRMC also said the junction of Mindoro West Coast Road (San Isidro) in Penal Colony and Junction of Yapang Road was not passable due to road slip.
Meanwhile, in Manila, a 35-year-old man drowned along the riverbank of Pasig River at Punta, Sta. Ana at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the NDRRMC said. The victim, Mario de Leon, was collecting garbage along the riverbank when the current swept him. His body was found at about 1 p.m. Friday. — LBG, GMA News
