Progressive bloc endorses 5 administration senatorial bets

(Updated 3 p.m.) The progressive Makabayan bloc on Thursday endorsed five senatorial candidates from the administration slate for the 2013 midterm elections. At a press conference in Quezon City, Makabayan president Satur Ocampo announced his coalition is supporting the candidacy of the following senatorial bets:
  • Senator Francis Escudero,
  • Senator Loren Legarda,
  • Senator Aquilino Pimentel,
  • Movie and Television Review and Classification Board chairman Grace Poe-Llamanzares, and
  • former Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Villar.
The progressive bloc called the five senators and the group’s standard-bearer, Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teodoro Casiño, as the six “Senate champions.” Ocampo, who lost his senatorial bid in 2010 under the slate of then-presidential bet Senator Manuel Villar, said the senatorial candidates were chosen based on “a history of cooperation.” “Ang pangunahing konsiderasyon ay ‘yung matagal nang pagsasamahan at pagtutulungan. Sa hanay ng senatorial candidates, hindi naging mahirap ang pagpili sa kanila dahil very positive ang kanilang responses,” the Makabayan president said. He added that Makabayan’s chosen guest candidates agreed to support the coalition’s platforms, including its advocacy for the lowering of prices of basic commodities, seeking an end to extrajudicial killings, and the review of bilateral treaties. Ocampo likewise said that the guest candidates vowed to focus on common legislative agenda, such as genuine agrarian reform, the Freedom of Information bill, and amendments to the Cybercrime Law.
No agreement on campaigning

Escudero, however, said he and the other Makabayan guest candidates do not have an agreement with the coalition on whether or not they will campaign together.

“Walang ganoong usapan. Palagay ko kasi, hindi na uso ung mga traditional na paraan ng pangangampanya. Mas pipiliin ko gamitin ang media at mga makabagong paraan ng pangangampanya,” he said in a separate interview.

Villar, meanwhile, said she will join some of Makabayan’s campaign, even with no formal agreement with the coalition on campaign logistics.

“Wala naman silang sinabing rules tungkol sa kung ano ang kailangan naming gawin. Basta ang sinabi nila, we should support their advocacies. Sino ba naman kami para tumanggi?” she said.

Villar added she thinks Makabayan’s move to adopt her as a guest candidate will boost her chances of winning a senatorial slot next year.

“Makabayan can definitely help us dahil marami silang organizations and malaki ang network nila. They will actually reinforce our candidacies,” she said.

Poe-Llamanzares, for her part, said she agreed to be Makabayan’s guest candidate because she believes in the coalition’s platform of governance.

“Hindi ito katulad ng traditional political parties because they stand on issues and not on personalities. Hindi na mahalaga kung saan ka magsasalita, basta pinaglalaban mo ang pinaglalaban ng Makabayan,” she said.

For his part, Casiño claimed the Makabayan coalition can deliver 3.8 million votes to their guest senatorial candidates in next year’s polls.

“Hindi sila pinili based on political convenience, kundi mayroon kaming pinagkakaisahan Sa lahat ng slates na meron ngayon, kami pa lang ang nagpapahayag ng malinaw na plataporma,” he said. — LBG/RSJ, GMA News
