Cockfighting, horse-racing, and jai-alai are rather common in the Philippines, but for at least one day, they become illicit activities.
According to Republic Act 229 signed in 1948, people are prohibited from engaging in these activities on December 30, the anniversary of national hero Jose Rizal's death.
Those who are caught violating the act will be punished with a fine of not more than P200, imprisonment of not more than six months, or both, plus a one-month suspension from office if the violator is a mayor.
The act also requires mayors to create a committee to oversee the "proper observance of Rizal Day Celebration," which includes raising the Philippine flag at half-mast in all public places. — Amanda Lago/KBK, GMA News
