GMA reporter Jiggy Manicad, 6 others awarded TOYM 2012

In perhaps one of the coolest ceremonies ever held at the usually protocol-stiff Malacañang, Allan “apl.de.ap” Pineda performed for President Benigno Aquino III, Palace staff and his fellow TOYM (The Outstanding Young Men) of 2012 awardees, Wednesday.
 
In a mini-concert that literally rocked the august gathering, the Pampanga-born rapper sang hits  like “We Can Be Anything”, “Bebot” and “Where is the Love”. 
 
apl.de.ap is one fourth of  the Grammy-award winning American hip-hop group The Black Eyed Peas. Their influential sound that mixes R&B, pop, and dance first gained popular acclaim as well as high record sales through their third album “Elephunk.” apl is also legally blind in both eyes because of a condition called nystagmus.   
 
apl.de.ap was awarded in the category of Contemporary Music for his contributions to, and promotion of, Pinoy music in an international milieu.  
 

Another awardee given the TOYM recogniton during the Palace ceremony was Kapuso reporter Rodrigo “Jiggy” Manicad, Jr.
 
Manicad, who was recognized in his field of Broadcast Journalism, hosts several programs on the GMA network, including the award-winning investigative documentary program Reporter’s Notebook and 24 Oras Weekend.
 
In his speech during the event, Aquino hailed the awardees as “symbols,” saying the award came with the responsibility of showing the world that the Pinoy is world class.
 
“Beginning today, you are no longer merely private individuals, but symbols—symbols that clearly show our countrymen and the rest of the world that the Filipino is world class, and that, no matter how successful he or she becomes, the Filipino never loses the spirit of bayanihan, and always comes back to help his fellowmen,” Aquino said.
 
For his part, Manicad was grateful for the award as it motivated him to continue in the work that he loves.
 
“Di lang sya pagkilala. Isa itong motivation, karagdagang challenge para mapagbuti pa ang aking trabaho bilang broadcast journalist. ,Humbling experience sya,” Manicad said.
 
A veteran journalist of 17 years, Manicad also said that the award will inspire him to work even harder to deliver quality content.,
 
“Gusto ko i-level up pa yung klase ng trabaho ko para magsilbi sa publiko,” Manicad said.
 
Given annually, the TOYM is the Philippines’ most prestigious search for young men and women between the ages of 18 to 40, who contributed significantly in their chosen fields and advocacies.
 
Other awardees in Wednesay's ceremony included Democratic Independent Workers’ Association (DIWA) Partylist Representive Emmeline Aglipay for Public Service; Warren Baticados for Veterinary Medicine; Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong for Sports; Abelardo David for Community Occupational Rehabilitation; Ivan Anthony Henares for Heritage Conservation and Allan “apl.de.ap” Pineda for Contemporary Music.
