At least two Filipinos fleeing the violence in Sabah were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard while heading for Tawi-Tawi province.

The two Filipinos also bolstered claims that Malaysian security forces maltreated many Filipino civilians in Sabah, radio dzBB reported early Tuesday.

The two, initially identified in the report as Jul Ibba, 50; and Gafur Rudjin, 22, were quoted in the report as saying many Filipinos wanted to flee the violence in Sabah.

However, they were also quoted in the dzBB report as saying many Filipinos were being shot by Malaysian authorities.

A separate report on Bombo Radyo said the two were aboard the fishing banca "Love Story" when the Coast Guard's BRP EDSA rescued them.

Several Filipinos had tried to flee from Sabah where Malaysian authorities had been conducting an offensive to flush out followers of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III's followers.

While Sultan Kiram has offered a unilateral ceasefire, Malaysia has rejected it and instead insisted that they lay down their arms without conditions. —KG, GMA News
