PNP: 58 incidents of election-related violence since Jan. 13

The Philippine National Police (PNP) recorded about 58 incidents of election-related violence across the country, with shooting being the most prevalent type, from the period of January 13 to May 5, 2013, the police said on its latest election-related incident report. Of the total, 51 were shootings. The other recorded incidents of election violence were two cases of grenade throwing, one incident of ambush, one of strafing, and three other undisclosed incidents. In total, 35 people have been killed and 34 were wounded. No charges of election-related violence have been filed in court as most of the incidents (42 cases) are still under investigation. Central Visayas or Region VII, which covers the provinces of Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor, recorded the highest number of poll-related violence cases, listing seven incidents. Region IV-A (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) and Region IX (Zamboanga peninsula) both recorded six incidents of poll-related violence.
