With the rainy season almost here, the Department of Health over the weekend advised the public, especially those in flood-prone areas, to take precautions against leptospirosis.

The DOH warned leptospirosis' symptoms include fever, internal bleeding, meningitis and in severe cases, organ failure and even death, radio dzBB's Mao dela Cruz reported Sunday.

Leptospirosis stems from exposure to water contaminated by the waste of rodents. People in depressed areas are likely to be prone to the disease, the report added.

A separate report on state-run Philippines News Agency said the DOH regards leptospirosis as an "immediate concern" as it noted at least 39 people died in February due to leptospirosis in Davao City, which was hit by a flood last January.

"Children must be instructed to avoid wading and swimming in flood waters to avoid leptospirosis. Another way to avoid contracting the disease is by using boots, goggles, overalls and rubber gloves when going to a flooded area," PNA reported.

The DOH likewise reminded the public to boil water for at least 10 to 15 minutes before drinking.

It also advised that food should be washed and boiled in clean water. — LBG, GMA News
