Government science scholars will get first crack at being hired as teachers in public secondary schools, the Department of Education said.

In Memorandum 114, DepEd instructed its regional directors to prioritize scholars of the Department of Science and Technology Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) program.

“This fresh infusion to our teaching force is DepEd’s contribution to nation-building as the country’s economic activities are becoming more and more science and technology-driven,” DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro said.

He added the expertise of these graduates is needed to address the need for teachers in mathematics and science-related fields.

On the other hand, the DepEd noted the DOST-SEI scholars had signed an agreement to teach in public high schools in their home regions upon completion of their courses.

The teaching will be for a period equivalent to the number of years they benefited from the scholarship.

“These scholars must pass the Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET) within the year as a prerequisite for a permanent position,” Luistro added. — LBG, GMA News
