For causing P1.4B damage, 'Labuyo' to be removed from PHL list of cyclone names
For causing more than P1.4 billion in damage to Philippine crops and infrastructure, the state's weather bureau will remove "Labuyo" from its list of local tropical cyclone names.
PAGASA deputy administrator Flaviana Hilario said they decommission a cyclone's name if it causes more than P1 billion in damage, radio dzBB reported Tuesday.
Citing data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), Hilario said "Labuyo," international codename Utor, caused P1,418,685,679.59 in damage, including:
- P414,109,535.68 in infrastructure, and
- P1,004,576,143.91 in agriculture.
The NDRRMC's August 18 update on Labuyo said the cyclone left at least 11 dead, seven injured, and three missing.
Tropical Cyclone Maring
Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said the number of people affected by last week's monsoon rain and floods enhanced by Tropical Cyclone Maring continued to rise.
On its Tuesday update, the NDRRMC said the rain and floods affected 643,281 families or 2,929,766 people in 155 towns and 37 cities in 18 provinces.
Of these, 15,336 families or 63,511 people are being served in 311 evacuation centers.
The death toll remained at 25, with 30 injured and three missing.
At least 318 areas in 38 towns and cities in Ilocos, Central and Southern Luzon and Metro Manila are still flooded, the NDRRMC said. - VVP, GMA News
