Sotto: Enrile 'rushed' to hospital Saturday due to high blood pressure

(Updated 5:04 p.m.) Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile was "rushed to the hospital" on Saturday morning due to high blood pressure, Senator Vicente Sotto III said Monday.

Sotto, however, did not say whether Enrile is still in the hospital as of posting time. Sotto also did not say which hospital his colleague was brought to.

GMA News Online tried to reach Lizette Nepomuceno, Enrile's media relations officer, to inquire about the senator's current whereabouts, but she has yet to reply as of posting time.

Plunder raps were filed against Enrile and his fellow senators Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. and Jinggoy Estrada on Monday afternoon before the Office of the Ombudsman for their alleged involvement in the supposed P10-billion pork barrel scam.

At a separate press briefing, Estrada confirmed that the 89-year-old Enrile was hospitalized last Saturday, due to hypertension triggered by "stones" in his body.

"Senator Enrile is indisposed right now. His blood pressure shot up .... Parang meron yata siyang stones sa kidney or gall bladder that caused his blood pressure to rise," Estrada said.

Estrada, however, added that when he last talked with Enrile, the minority leader was "okay" and "in high spirits."

Estrada also gave the assurance that Enrile will attend Senate sessions once given clearance by the doctor.

Last month, Enrile denied knowing businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles, the alleged mastermind of the P10-billion pork barrel scam. He also said he was not aware that his discretionary funds were being transferred to questionable non-government organizations associated with Napoles. — Andreo Calonzo/RSJ, GMA News
