DepEd honors teachers on World Teachers' Day

For one day, teachers in the Philippines will be feted Saturday with a celebration to be led by the Department of Education.

The event is scheduled at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City, with the theme “My Teacher, My Hero,” to mark World Teachers’ Day.

“As prime instruments of education and molders of young minds, teachers hold a special place in society. This celebration honors the remarkable deeds of the members of the noblest profession. We are where we are because of the teachers that have touched our lives,” said DepEd secretary Armin Luistro.

Over 7,000 guests are expected to join the celebration at the PhilSports Arena, the DepEd said.

Shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday, teachers started trooping to the PhilSports Arena for World Teachers' Day.

"The excitement is in the air!" the DepEd said.

The DepEd live-streams the event for those who could not make it to the PhilSports Arena.

Even before Saturday's event, the DepEd had gone to Twitter to show appreciation for teachers by asking students to tweet #ThankYouTeacher greetings.

Inspiring stories of teachers were also posted on the DepEd's Facebook wall during National Teachers’ Month.

Meanwhile, the DepED head office will feature exhibits, cultural performances, games, beauty-and-wellness services, medical outreach, and freebies.

“We hope our teachers can sit back, relax and enjoy their special day,” Luistro said. — LBG, GMA News
